Dear JEEVES Clients,
Happy June! Thank you for choosing JEEVES.
Since this month marks the start of summer, I wanted to highlight an essential garment care practice: Removing plastic packaging prior to storage. As stated on the warning label found on the back of all plastic packaging used for garments cleaned at JEEVES, it is imperative that plastic packaging is always removed for any long-term storage. I'd say anything longer than a month is considered long-term storage.
Why is this important?
Plastic packaging is used exclusively for transportation and hygiene purposes. It ensures that your cleaned garments do not come into contact with other clients' items during transit or while cleaning in our facilities. The reason we opt for plastic over other materials is durability, especially in Hong Kong's rainy season, where it provides effective protection for garments in transit.
That said, plastic must be removed before storage, as it does not allow fabrics to breathe, leading to humidity buildup-especially in Hong Kong's humid seasons. Fluctuating temperatures caused by air conditioning, closet openings, and seasonal shifts create an unstable environment. Plastic packaging traps moisture, resulting in premature mould growth or oxidation, which can potentially damage your garments.
Our Commitment to Sustainability & Recycling
At JEEVES, we are committed to reducing plastic waste and exploring alternative packaging solutions. We have tested biodegradable plastics and vegetable- or cellulose-based plastics, and while we previously used biodegradable plastic, our supplier in Hong Kong unfortunately closed down during the pandemic. However, testing and research remain ongoing here at JEEVES.
To support sustainability, we encourage clients to return any JEEVES plastic packaging to our delivery staff during their next collection or deposit JEEVES plastic packaging and hangers in our "hanger recycling box" at either our Aberdeen or Central locations.
We work with local recycling partners to reuse or upcycle these materials. If plastic packaging is still usable, we sanitize it in our facilities for future use.
My Essential Storage Tips for the Hong Kong Summer
1. Always clean garments before storage - Stains or dirt can oxidize, permanently altering fabric texture and colour. Cleaning garments before storage prevents mould accumulation and extends the lifecycle of the piece.
2. Use breathable fabric garment bags or dust bags to protect your pieces - Avoid plastic packaging for storage. Fabric garment bags allow airflow and reduce humidity buildup.
3. Probably the top tip from my experience: Store only clean garments together - Never mix worn and clean garments in storage, as cross-contamination accelerates mould growth, especially during Hong Kong's humid summer period.
4. Handle garments with clean hands - Hidden dirt and natural oils on your hands can cause invisible stains that may develop over time, leading to oxidation and fabric damage. For extra protection, consider using garment gloves when handling valuable cleaned pieces such as light-coloured garments or bridal wear.
I hope these basic care tips help you preserve your garments during this summer period and for years to come. I look forward to sharing more in next month's newsletter. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me directly at Jeeves@jeeves.com.hk if you have any questions or comments.
Kind regards,
Ryan Merszei
